Mel O'Brien

Music Director

Mel (she/her) is a classically-trained and versatile performer, creative and vocal coach based in Melbourne with experience across musical theatre, cabaret, opera, stage and screen. With a Bachelor of Music (Performance - Voice) from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, a Diploma of Musical Theatre from NIDA and currently studying her Masters of Music (Performance Teaching), Mel is a well-equipped and passionate contributor to every creative team she finds herself in, with a particular affinity for collaboration, comedy and the development of new work. Her recent credits as a performer include Up Late! (Griffin Theatre Company), Voldermort and the Teenage Hogwarts Musical Parody (Salty Theatre), No Hat, No Play! The Cabaret (Melbourne International Comedy Festival), Girls are Hot! A New Musical (Flesh Coloured Panties Productions), Starstruck (RGM Productions), Miracle City (Festival of Emerging Artists), Tinder Tales (Melbourne International Comedy Festival) and The Mikado (Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Victoria). In 2017, Mel was the Executive Producer and co-creator of ‘The Sitzprobe’ initiative at the University of Melbourne Musical Theatre Association; an event that sought out student musical theatre writers and provided a first stage to 8 new works, and in 2018 she worked as Vocal Coach on the company’s production of The Witches of Eastwick. Mel also runs her own private vocal studio and is currently under the tutelage of Australian soprano Antoinette Halloran.
